If a job seeker simply lists down his past work experiences blatantly without any mention of the results of his work in his Resume, he’s likely to lose the attention of the Hiring Manager. If the focus is partly shifted to discuss the results obtained, then he has a higher chance of getting the Hiring Manager engaged to understand more about his past work history. There are a few ways to keep this engagement ongoing ie to keep the Hiring Manager “glued” to your Resume. Here’s 5 of them.
1. Make Money 2. Save Money 3. Save Time 4. Improve Existing Processes 5. Solve Problems Making Money. If you’ve closed sales of significant figures or if you managed to secure business deals of significantly large value or if you’ve managed to secure a joint venture with a prestigious corporation, then this is where you can showcase what you’ve done. Here are examples of how you can flaunt it with POISE! Closed 30 Real Estate Transactions in 1 month; improved the department’s KPI of Transactions Closed per unit month by 5% and raised the overall company’s sales monthly revenue by USD100K in month of Mar 2012. Led a team of 10 personnel in the Sales & Marketing Team and secured new business ventures with ABC Corporation. Newly secured business opportunities are projected to bring in returns of USD 10M over the next 2 years. Save Money If you didn’t make money for the company but saved money instead, that’s not too bad either. In fact the more you can save (without compromising on basic functionalities), the more valuable you are given most companies are operating at one of the most cost efficient levels ever since the financial tsunami in 2008. Streamlined 8 out of 10 of the Production process and achieved a combined savings of USD 2M/year and an estimated 8% improvement in Production Efficiency. Formulated Divestment plans for the Corporation as part of the Corporation’s move to achieve cost effectiveness. Plans have been reviewed by the Corporation’s top management and are projected to achieve an annual savings of USD 30M. Save Time Usually, time savings come hand in hand with monetary savings. They’re usually proportionate to each other as the more time saved implies more money saved. If possible, your statements should state both values where possible to enhance the effectiveness of your statement. Authored a computer program using C++ and Visual Basic that reduced the time required for the accounting reconciliation process by 30%; program was shared across the various affiliates in different countries to enhance the company’s accounting efficiency. Upgraded the ageing bottling facilities of the factory which resulted in a reduction of 3 head-counts amounting to savings of USD 100K; new facilities increased the factory’s bottling capability by 20%. Improve Existing Processes If you’ve done something marvelous to improve existing processes such that you can value add the company, that’s something you should write in your Resume as well. It doesn’t have to be something fantastic. In fact the simpler your solution is, the more impressive you become because you’ve made life easier for everyone. Wrote an excel spreadsheet to capture calculations needed for inputs into the production machines. Use of spreadsheet eliminated manual calculations and therefore completely eliminated all sources of mistakes that can arise from manual calculations. Spreadsheet was highlighted as a best practice in the corporation and won the Best Technician of the Year Award. Solve Problems Every company has its own problems – a myriad of big and small ones. The bigger the problem you solved, the more valuable you are since you’ve proven yourself to be bigger than the problem. Highlight the big problems that you solved. Led a team of 5 Technicians to investigate the causes of constant bottling machine failure and formulated troubleshooting strategies. Executed the strategies and isolated the problem; liaised with Maintenance Unit to replace the fault which resolved the constant failures after which. Participated in the company’s audit with a team of 10 Senior Auditors to determine the root causes of the company’s Account Reconciliation Irregularity in Aug 2011. Jointly formulated solutions to prevent future recurrences; accounts were rigorously audited on a monthly basis post investigations and no further irregularities were detected. In most circumstances, you might want to consider breaking the paragraph into 2 or 3 points for easy reading. While the numbers can change, the general concepts remain. Fundamentally, the appropriate use of numbers, action words and sentence structure is key in enhancing the effect of the words on the reader. Remember, the objective is to make the Hiring Manager glued to your Resume. Therefore, it is vital that you provide as much juicy information as you possibly can to entice him to read through your Resume. The more he reads, the more likely you are in getting the Interview.
